The eye department of the city clinical hospital №1 started working at the beginning of the XIX, when in 1824 the first eye hospital with 10 beds was opened in Moscow. The 29th ophthalmologic department in GKB No. 1 was opened as early as the beginning of the 19th century, that is, the period of the creation of the Golitsyn Hospital named after NI Pirogov. Initially, it was a 10-bed hospital, which in 1824 became the first in Moscow. As such, it existed until 1847, when it was closed.

The famous ophthalmologist M.I. Averbakh in 1918 contributed to the founding of a new hospital with 50 seats. A previously empty building of the Golitsyn hospital was used under it. A year later, an ambulance station was established in it, under which the lower floor was taken. Since 1924, Lyubina Lyubov Solomonovna, who was a student of the founder, headed the medical department.

Later, before the war, Tsirlin became the head of the GKb 1 ophthalmology department, and in wartime until 1952 Natalia Alexandrovna Pletneva. She increased the number of places in the department to 82 places. After her office was headed until 1984 by Tatyana Avakumovna Fedotova. In 1964, another 8 beds were added to the department, and the number of beds became equal to 90. At this point, the position of the second head was introduced. This place was taken by Podyakova Lyudmila Dmitrievna. Since 1984, the hospital has been working under the direction of Krakow, Yuri Grigorievich. At present, he is headed by Aleksey Viktorovich Bakharev.

The year 1986 was marked by a global relocation. At that moment he was transferred to the territory of the modern building of the Pirogov GKB. At the same time, at the department, the Department of Postgraduate Medical Education was opened and Botmanov Yury Evgenievich became its first head. He led until 2004, when he was replaced by Igor Medvedev. During the work of the faculty a lot of highly qualified specialists and academicians were graduated. To this day, the priority of his work remains the training of specialists, training and retraining, advanced training.
